Big Ben (House of Parliament)

Big Ben is undoubtedly one of the most iconic landmarks in the world and a visit to see it would be a highlight of any trip to London. The beautiful old clock tower is the most recognisable feature of the Palace of Westminster, however, its name is actually the Elizabeth Tower. Big Ben is the name of the bell hidden away behind the clock face. This is a wonderful place to visit at day or night as the adjacent Parliament Square is always full of activity. Sadly, it is not possible for visitors to get inside the Elizabeth Tower and actually see Big Ben itself, however, tours of the Palace of Westminster are possible when Parliament is not in session.

• Big Ben Facts:

The original Palace of Westminster was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1834. Construction of the current Palace commenced in 1840 and took 30 years to complete. Work on the 96m tall clock tower finished in 1858 and the world famous bell known as Big Ben first rang the following year.

The Palace Stands next to Parliament Square, right in the heart of London. The Square is home to numerous statues of significant historical figures, including Winston Churchill and Abraham Lincoln, all standing in the shadow of one of London’s most beautiful and famous churches, Westminster Abbey. Everywhere you look there is a wonderful photo opportunity encompassing many of the most famous icons of London life with red telephone boxes, red double decker buses and black taxis all around.

Big Ben is situated in a true tourist hub. 10 Downing Street, the official home of the British Prime Minister is located just a couple of streets away to the North whilst a 15-minute stroll across St James’s Park will bring you right to Buckingham Palace. If more modern entertainment is your preference, then a quick hop across Westminster Bridge will bring you to a huge array of tourist hotspots including the London Eye, the London Dungeons, the Sea Life Aquarium London and Shrek’s Adventure. From here you can also take river cruises along the Thames or wander along the Queens Walk to the thriving cultural centre of Southbank.
